“Occupational therapy (OT) is a science degree-based, health and social care profession, regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council. Occupational therapy takes a “whole-person approach” to both mental and physical health and wellbeing and enables individuals to achieve their full potential.” – Royal College of Occupational Therapists, 2018.

Occupational Therapy is the provision of practical support to help people living with illness (mental and/or physical) to complete everyday activities that are important to them – whether these be related to personal, domestic, leisure, social or vocational skills. It is these daily activities, or occupations, that enable people to live independently with a sense of purpose and meaning. How would life be different in your day to day life if you couldn’t shower or dress independently, or perhaps undertake an essential component of your work due to a health problem?

Occupational Therapists work in a wide variety of settings including hospitals, community health care teams, social care teams, housing associations, educational settings, workplaces, prisons, voluntary organisations and as independent practitioners or with private companies. Occupational Therapists work with people of all ages and with a wide range of health care difficulties.

Occupational Therapists use a holistic approach in their work to meet people’s needs. We look at physical, psychological, social and environmental issues and aim to provide people with the skills to be as independent as possible.
